Embrace Your Destiny: Be Audacious

Doing yoga on a cruise
“Ms. Lucifer, we’ve been trying to get along for twenty years. You were the audacious one during the first half of our journey. You were bold. You ruled me completely. I’ll admit that you were ever present in my mind. I didn’t like you then. Now, I feel like I have come to terms with you in the second half of our acquaintance. Now, I am being audacious in dealing with you. Don't you like this cool word, "audacious" that I learned in Toastmasters? Toastmasters stimulates my audacity. I’m definitely keeping you at bay.”

Ms. Lucifer was quick to note some setbacks. She said, “As I I recall, being audacious has gotten you into trouble. Aren’t I right?

Embrace Your Destiny: What Is Your Goal?

I needed some inspiration to help me zero in on this blog post. My reader  blog comments did the trick. Inspiration washed over me! Thank you for taking time to comment.

What I strive for everyday is to feel good, happy and motivated. Sometimes before breakfast and hot yoga, I notice aches, pains and worries. Getting locked into my daily routine of yoga, weight work, piano practice, and healthy eating fixes all my issues.

During this pandemic, it’s more important than ever to remain positive.  A special edition on Multiple Sclerosis of Brain and Life Magazine came in the mail recently. It was packed full of information about the disease that validated everything I do. Furthermore, since I have the Primary Progressive type of MS, I should be slowly deteriorating. My husband Donnie agrees with me that I’m not. i feel better, walk better, have more energy and can do more than when I started this journey twenty years ago.

Embrace Your Destiny: Manage Yourself

In the Arizona desert, October 2019
January  marks twenty years I have been managing Multiple Sclerosis. The first fourteen years I was adjusting to this new me. I learned what to expect from the disease physically, mentally, emotionally and physiologically. It’s a very complex disease. I have the Primary Progressive type of MS.

My biggest issues have always been physical with spasticity, balance and irregular gait being most troublesome. The mental issues are not as obvious. Reflecting back, I had them. I had plenty of physiological issues too. All the symptoms are insidious in that they creep up from nowhere. For example, in the past three years, I noticed that my core has been slowly going to mush.

Toastmasters is part of my cognitive therapy. I’ve competed in the International Speech Contest several times. After much deliberation I decided to compete again. I have something to say about living with and managing a chronic illness. I can use this platform to communicate that you can manage MS and enjoy doing it. In the past five years, slowly but surely, I am improving. First I had to get out of my comfort zone. I tried new therapies and I continued to work hard.

Embrace Your Destiny: Hard Work Pays Off

Working at the big cable machine
I have been working with a trainer at Gold's Gym for fourteen months. Lacey Blanton worked with me thirteen of those months on my goals of strengthening core,  posture and of course, walking. She has passed me on to another trainer who she says can take me to the next level.
Evan Camboy is my new trainer. In my first session, he began by  analyzing what I can do to determine where we needed to begin. Not surprisingly he identified the same issues of abduction, core strength, and leg strength that Lacey had been concentrating on.

Embrace Your Destiny: Enjoy the Improvements

A new stretch
Week by week, I'm getting stronger. I see improvement in leg strength almost daily. How do I know? My most immediate example is what else, just walking.

I had done hot yoga followed by an hour workout at the gym. I had worked on leg strength that day. Normally, after doing both activities, my legs feel heavy and tired. They did feel a bit tired, but my son-in-law, Philippe invited me to take a walk with him. I love walking and it was a beautiful day. Of course, I said yes. We walked on a gravel road that was very rough in places. It had holes and uneven loose gravel and was hilly. We went to the top of a hill then turned around to go home. Even on the return hike, I had no problem with balance or leg motion. My right foot rarely toe-tapped and I didn't need to hold Philippe's arm very often. That's progress!

Embrace Your Destiny: Working on Core Strength

I'm slapping the ropes from side to side
My trainer, Lacey has a long list of core strength exercises. I think she gives me a new one every time I have a coaching session. She likes to pair core strength exercises with leg strengthening.

The work plan always starts with a warm up series of 3 or 4 exercises. I repeat the series 2 or 3 times. Then we shift to another group of exercises for some part of the body such as shoulders, core, front legs or back legs. Sometimes we stay in the same area and use a mat and other tools. We usually end in the free weight area or in the machine area to work the same muscle group.

Embrace Your Destiny: Strength Training with Lacey

Before going to the more complex and stressful topic of drug therapies, I want to tell you how enthused I am about my new strength training regime. My goal is to work with my trainer, Lacey one hour a week. Supplementing that I will go on my own at least once  more per week. Some weeks maybe more.

For seniors over 65 on Medicare, the Silver Sneakers program is free. We found a new, beautiful Gold's Gym just across the street from my Hot Yoga Studio. Every time Lacey introduces me to new apparatuses like the big cable machine, she shows me how to work the machine and do the exercise properly. Safety is her mantra, I'm sure. She always asks if I got sore. I answer "no". She starts with small weights. I tell her if we can go up or down.

After four lessons, numerous practice sessions on my own, I can report definite improvement. How you ask? Here is what I know:

  • I am not getting fatigued standing to cook late in the afternoon.
  • I haven't fallen in standing poses at yoga.
  • My core balance is helping me get dressed easier.
  • My walking is improving. It's not as jerky and the toe tapping is rare.
Since my goal is better walking, more endurance, and improved core strength, I'm happy with these results. Yes, it takes time but I figure this is my work, my job and it's really kinda fun!

We'll do more serious stuff next time.
