Embrace Your Destiny: Working on Core Strength

I'm slapping the ropes from side to side
My trainer, Lacey has a long list of core strength exercises. I think she gives me a new one every time I have a coaching session. She likes to pair core strength exercises with leg strengthening.

The work plan always starts with a warm up series of 3 or 4 exercises. I repeat the series 2 or 3 times. Then we shift to another group of exercises for some part of the body such as shoulders, core, front legs or back legs. Sometimes we stay in the same area and use a mat and other tools. We usually end in the free weight area or in the machine area to work the same muscle group.

Lacey introduced a fun apparatus for building core strength. I've seen the football players like Cam Newton work with the big ropes in commercials.  Lacey gave me two exercises using those ropes. They really are challenging. One I'm sitting upright and then shift both ropes together from one side of my legs to the other. The other one is done standing up in a squat position. I still haven't perfected the action but it's coming along slowly. I'm suppose to work my arms to create a mini-wave action with the ropes. My left hand doesn't want to cooperate.

At Gold's Gym we have so many tools to work with. They have new and wonderful machines available to work every muscle group. Lacey has instructed me on some of machines. She has me use the leg extension machine which works the quads, the hamstring pull back machine and one for the hips. I need lot of leg work. Sometimes Lacey has me work each leg separately after doing both legs together. Sometimes she has me do negatives slowly. As I understand  it, this builds muscle in a different way. For these I start by lifting up the weight then lower the weight slowly. All the leg work is certainly helping my walking. What is interesting is that slowly, it's taking less recovery time after doing a hard leg workout. My legs use to be very tired and heavy. The more I get to the gym, the more improvement I feel. I am trying to go two times per week in addition to my coaching session.
