Embrace Your Destiny: Indulge Your Senses

Today I went to see my massage therapist, Micah Couttet. This is a monthly indulgence that I have found both feels great and does fabulous work on my muscles and nervous system.

When Micah started working on me about two years ago, he said the hour time was only working on the knots and other blockages in my muscles. He recommended more time or more frequent visits. Sometimes he would have to concentrate in one problem area before finishing the rest of my body. He says he has noticed a change in my body. He said it is more muscular and he is able to get deeper into the soft tissues. Over the three years I've been going to him, the problem areas have disappeared.

Probably the biggest benefit of massage therapy for me, or probably anyone these days is stress reduction. WebMD warns that constant stress or distress leads to many physical and emotional issues. The Massage Envy web site validates my experience that massage reduces stress.  Some of the physical symptoms I experience when stress rises are headaches and upset stomach. Other symptoms you might experience are elevated blood pressure, chest pains, and problems sleeping. I didn't realize the impact massage would also have helping with my goal of improving my posture. Improved posture not only makes me feel better by helping the body organs maintain proper functioning, I do believe I also look better.

Finding a massage therapist that you like should be relatively easy. There are many on line and often they frequent yoga studios or gyms. I found Micah through my first hot yoga studio. I like Micah because he works intuitively on me and knows his craft thoroughly.

Before he starts, I update him on any issues or changes I have noticed in my body. For the past three months, I have been able to report that my walking has been the best it's been in many years. Also, my strength and balance are improving which allows me to do more standing and work. Finally, and the best from my prospective, is I don't hurt anywhere. He's always interested in how the other therapies of acupuncture, chiropractic, yoga, and strength training are interacting. I personally think everything is connected and is helping. Therefore, I relax and enjoy the massage experience. The table is warm, his music selection is soothing and interesting, and I think the muscles must talk to him. He seems to know just how much pressure to apply and where to apply it.

Today, he told me about the mixture of essential oils that he used in an infuser and put in the massage oil. The mixture he used was clove, patchouly, and cedar wood. Essential oils are absorbed through the skin or into the lungs. Both go directly to the blood stream to nourish the body. The lungs take it directly to the blood stream from the air and the skin does the same thing but through the circulatory system. Essential oils are derived from plants. I have learned that it's important to buy good quality oils which can be expensive. The benefits are real. Essential oils are a healing therapy by themselves as I've discovered. The website Essentials for Healing have both information about essential oil therapy and stories about healing. The more I learn, the more I want to learn.
